Obituary of John Warren Pilet Jr.
It is with great sadness that the family of John Warren Pilet Jr. announces his unexpected passing on Monday, October 19, 2020, due to an undiagnosed chronic medical condition. He was 63.
Born December 30, 1956, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late John W. Pilet Sr. and Beverly (Thompson) Pilet, John grew up the oldest of four brothers. He attended Saint Bernard High School and was a member of the Class of 1974, where he was the lead percussionist in the band. After graduating, he went right into the workforce.
John was a hardworking and driven professional with unmatched work ethic and tenacity. He put his dedication and skills to use and in 1982, was well into a rewarding career as a young general manager when he met his future wife, Claudia Serpas. They married in December of 1986 and had one daughter together, Lisa Lynn Pilet, but a total of five children, each having a son and a daughter from a former marriage. In 1991, John and his family moved to Slidell, Louisiana, where he resided until his death.
He was the former owner and operator of All Stars Video in Tickfaw, Louisiana, for 25 years until he closed permanently in 2010 when he retired. He was well liked and respected in his work community. He became a familiar face and popular staple during his years in business. John cherished the relationships he made with each and every one of his customers he came in contact with throughout the years. Some of them developed into close friendships, most notably, the one formed with his best friend, Dan Mabil.
In his retirement years, John renewed some of his greatest joys that had been sidelined. An avid drummer since high school and lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, his joy was restored when he was back to playing and riding. He enjoyed manicuring his lawn with the help of "Sylvia,” his riding mower, often with two of his fur babies on his lap. He also enjoyed the fellowship with his neighbors and their kindness and friendship.
He was wise beyond his education, and people of all ages and social statuses sought his advice and benefited from his guidance. He was a very engaging man who effortlessly connected with others through deep, meaningful conversation. He will be remembered for his teasing jokes, his wildly entertaining stories of personal life experience, his unfailing work ethic, his confidence, his unique style, and his exceptional shoe swag.
In his last days, when sickness robbed him of his strength and stamina, it also gave him a softness we treasured. During this time, he taught us patience and allowed us to show him a small measure of the service he had long shown all of us.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his wife of 34 years, Claudia Serpas Pilet; children, Lisa Pilet (Peter), Denise Piazza (Tommy), and David Pilet (Karleen); stepchildren, Jill Jeffrey (Mel) and Jimmy Russell (Jennifer); his nine grandchildren, Lauryn, Landon, Laikyn, James, Julia, Tommy, Emma, Dean, and Kate - all who tenderly called him Pontcha-John, a name coined by the eldest; his brothers, Jeff (Sheila), Gerald (Judy), and James; numerous nieces and nephews; his cherished friends, Dan Mabil and Renee Hudson; and his dearly loved fur babies, Lucy, Daisy-Mae, and Fuzzy.
