Obituary of Edna Marie Carter Lewis

Edna Marie Carter Lewis, of Slidell, Louisiana, lovingly known as “Granny” and “Honey” to most, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2021 at the age of 94. She was a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, born on December 23, 1926 to the late Edna Grilliette Carter and A.V. Carter. Edna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Lester P. Lewis and her brother, Fred Carter.  She is the cherished mother of Kelly Scott Lewis (Cheryl), Dianne Lewis Sehmi (Sammy), Pete Lewis (Martha), and the late Gerry Lynn Lewis Cocran and proud grandmother of ten grandchildren, Andrea Lewis Laurent, Jennifer Lee, Casey Bergeron, Di Sehmi, Chad Cocran, Daniel Cocran, Sarah Danos, Blake Lewis, Troy Lewis, and Kelly Lewis. She also showered love on 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Edna spent many years doing what she adored the most, taking care of her family and especially the babies. She was also active in the community, volunteering at Community Christian Concern and was a devoted and loyal member at New Jerusalem Church. Edna also enjoyed playing cards, especially gin rummy and bourré. She had a passion for cooking and made hundreds of Amaretto cakes and batches of pralines during holidays to generously share with others. She loved having friends and neighbors over for coffee and never met a stranger.  Edna taught us all about how to love and cherish one another and left an indelible impression on everyone that was lucky enough to know her.  She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Edna’s family would like to express a special thanks to her loving and compassionate caregivers for the past five years, Anita, Dee, Savannah, Carol, and Sandra and the staff of Passages Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Passages Hospice located at 20081 Highway 36, Covington, LA 70433 or New Jerusalem Praise and Worship Center at 62340 Military Rd., Pearl River, LA 70452.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation (masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed) on Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel.  Edna will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery following services.
