Mary Patricia “Pat” Berg Chiri, age 89, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
A native of Port Chester, NY, she resided in St. Cloud, FL, and Kissimmee, FL, before moving to Slidell in 1969. She retired to Englewood, FL, in 2007 before coming back to Slidell in 2020.
She graduated from St. Cloud High School, and attended the University of Florida before working professionally as a news reporter for the Osceola Sentinel in Kissimmee, then writing for the Slidell Daily Times and the Slidell Sentry-News.
Pat had a lifelong love of animals and was the founder of the Animal Assistance League of Slidell, besides gaining a following with her weekly pet column in the Slidell newspapers. She also owned and operated her own small business, “Chiri Critter Care” for many years in the Slidell area.
Additionally, she worked at the Slidell Airport and was a licensed pilot, and spent years as a Reserve Deputy for the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office.
She was the wife of the late Alberto Chiri; mother of Larry Chiri of Poplarville, MS, Kevin Chiri of Slidell, and Tony Chiri of Woodstock, GA; mother-in-law of Gail Chiri and Kathleen Chiri; and daughter of the late Peter Berg and Mary Jenkins.
Also, grandmother of Chrissy (Jerry) Smith, Jennifer Weisheit, Vicky Chiri, Michael (Lauren) Chiri, Brian Chiri, Lisa (Kyle) Furlong and Becky (Brandon) Lowham; and great-grandmother of Jerry Smith, Marshall Smith, Jordan Smith, Abby Weisheit, Zachary Weisheit, Reagan Weisheit, Henry Chiri, Kayla Furlong, Grace Furlong, Savannah Lowham and Noah Lowham.
A private family memorial service will be held. Final arrangements provided by Audubon Funeral Home.
