Obituary of Benny Paul Trahan Sr.

After a long, hard fight with pancreatic cancer, Benny Paul Trahan Sr. lost his battle at home surrounded by family on December 15, 2021. He was 78 years old. Benny was a native of Kaplan, Louisiana and resided in Slidell, Louisiana. He is the beloved husband of over 58 years to Kathleen Sperry Trahan; caring brother of Robert Trahan (Bridget), Sandra White (Howard) and the late Roger Trahan; cherished father of Deborah Harwell, Melissa Melerine (Todd), Pamela Fournier (John), Kenneth Trahan (Ellen), and the late Benny Trahan Jr. (Deborah); proud grandfather of Hunter, Holden, and Hayden Harwell, Chelsea Melerine Tramel (Charlton), Connor Melerine, Brandon, Alex, and Tristan Fournier; and uncle to many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Preston and Dorita Desormeaux Trahan and in-laws, Carmello and Evelyn Sperry.

Benny married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Kathleen Sperry, on August 30, 1963. They went on to have five children that he adored. Benny attended Southeastern Louisiana University for two years before entering the IBEW Local 130 Electrical Union, where he was a member for over 55 years, retiring from Walter J. Barnes Electric. He led a full life coaching his children and volunteering at Carolyn Park Playground, took family vacations, and had many hobbies. He continued to be a loving and supportive father and grandfather throughout his life. Benny was passionate about family, gardening, and his love for nature. Being a jack of all trades, he was very generous with his time in helping others. He had a beautiful soul, warm smile, a heart of gold, and was loved by all who met him.

Benny enjoyed speaking at garden club meetings, donating countless hours and irises to numerous projects such as Keep Slidell Beautiful  and volunteering at City Park. Out of his love for irises, “The Iris Patch” was born, where he spent much of his time. Benny was the foremost expert on the native species of irises in Louisiana based on extensive observation in the wild and in the garden. He registered over thirty irises, both species and hybrids, which he named for his family members. Benny was a longtime member of the Society for Louisiana Irises, the Greater New Orleans Iris Society, and the American Iris Society.

Benny’s family would like to thank Dr. Matthew McElveen and his staff, Slidell Memorial Cancer Center (especially Donna), Passages Hospice, and Trisha Schultz.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Audubon Funeral Home located at 61011 Highway 11 Slidell, LA 70458.
